It has a height of 60-100 centimeters. Its leaves are hard, thick, fleshy, with serrated edges and succulent, that is, they contain a large amount of water to survive in arid environments. Its color is green or gray-green, but some parts may have small white spots. Younger plants usually have spots, but they are red. The interior of the leaves contains a transparent gel. It is a perennial species, so its leaves do not usually fall during the year. The flowers are tubular and yellow in color.
 
In traditional medicine, it has been used to treat skin conditions, to soothe or heal sunburn, and to moisturize sensitive or irritated skin. The gel is also used to treat minor cuts and burns.
